The Power Of The Situation

The man and the kid from The Road travel as if they are being chased by something. The man is always very cautious and alert for what could happen. Whenever they spot movement or any sign of human being, the boy asks the man if “it’s the bad guys” (p.79)

So who are these bad guys? They are stronger than the others because they have trucks, oil, ammunitions and food when the others have just a few or none of those. They travel in groups and they capture people as they go. The people they capture they keep them locked in a room and what they serve as is food for the “bad guys”. (p.79)

These people are cannibals and that is something so wrong and inhumane. However, these people did not eat other people from the beginning. The desperation of having no food had changed them to become such horrific figures. In such situation where there is no food and one is starving, people are forced to find alternatives. Anything that is edible would be okay for him. In this case that alternative is other human beings.

I’m not trying to say they had no choice and so that their action is justifiable. Cannibalism is a horrible thing; however extreme situations can change people to do things they couldn't have imagined. Those people just could not resist the temptation of not starving by eating people. They did not become the bad guys just because, the awful situation forced them to make the choice, and they took the one that made them the bad guys.
